The square
—PLAY
During some of my studies I started a project on simple shapes that has remained a source of inspiration. Using children’s blocks that I found in charity shops, I explored some of the many different ways the square can be played with visually.
Using square blocks was the obvious place to start, but it was using negative space between them that I found interesting. Shooting these photos with proper studio lighting produced some lovey effects with shadow and light shining through the gaps between them.
Rectangular blocks also produced some interesting effects, by interlocking and again using negative space.
Finally I used triangular blocks to explore diagonals of the square. These little plastic pieces in the most delightful shade of mint, created some nice shapes that could be explored for logo designs.
